Do you know what basic information is needed to build a scale model? In this post, we explain everything you need to know.
When it comes to scale model making understanding the project in detail is essential. The more information available, the more precise and realistic the final result will be.
As specialists in scale models, we want to share every detail that model makers need before starting the construction process.

What Information Is Needed to Build a Model?
As mentioned earlier, it is crucial to have an in-depth understanding of the project before starting work. Reviewing project plans, elevations, finishes, and all technical documentation ensures that the model will be as accurate as possible.
Here are the most important details needed before starting to build a model:
- The site plan. If you don’t have formal plans, you can send us a sketch or a description of your idea to guide the design process.
- Project images
- Surface levels of the site where the project will be developed.
- An aerial photograph of the land.
- Building sections of the structures to be modelled.
- Colour references for façades, sidewalks, common areas, streetlights, and other elements.
- Design details of windows, terraces, balconies, etc.
- Landscaping designs for gardens or green areas.
- Roof finishes.
Once we have a general overview of what the model should represent, the following aspects are defined:
The Scale of the Model
Before construction begins, it is essential to establish the correct scale for the model. This will depend on factors such as the purpose of the model, the size of the project area, and the required level of detail.
Additionally, considerations include the available budget, the space where the model will be displayed, and whether it needs to be portable.
Estimated Construction Time
There is no fixed timeframe for building a model, as it depends on the complexity of each project.
However, based on our experience, building a real estate model typically takes around 8 weeks. Smaller models can be completed in approximately 4 weeks.
The current workload in our workshop may also influence these timelines. That is why at Maquetas Tech, we recommend ordering your model at least 8 weeks in advance to ensure timely delivery.
Materials to Be Used
Material selection is another key aspect of model making. Clients are encouraged to share their material preferences, and model makers will advise on the best options based on the design requirements and the intended use of the model.
The most common materials include PVC, acrylic, wood, and styrene.
At Maquetas Tech, we also frequently use 3D printing technology, which greatly facilitates the model-making process and offers new possibilities beyond traditional materials like methacrylate and wood.
